#Aquaman poster art! One of my favorite elements of the #Aquaman mythology is his relationship with his wife, #Mera. When I was young and just beginning to collect comic books, I enjoyed purchasing books that were really “old” — partially because they felt so otherworldly, but also because I thought they might be worth something. One of the first “old” comics I ever purchased with the marriage of Aquaman and Mera. On the cover, the two stand before the throne of Atlantis with their fellow heroes in attendance wearing the most awesomely retro scuba gear you’ve ever seen.
Years later, I purchased an issue of the Justice League during their “Detroit” years. In this issue, Aquaman, the leader of the League, receives a message from Mera that she is leaving him. For some reason, these two book-end moments in Aquaman’s and Mera’s marriage made a dent in my psyche. I was hooked on the emotional arc of Aquaman as a character, and I pined for a renewed relationship between him and his beautiful redheaded wife.
It was exciting to see Mera featured so prominently during Geoff Johns’s Blackest Night and Brightest Day story lines. I will be equally excited to see her join the Justice League in the DC Comics New 52.
In this illustration, Aquaman and Mera are seen riding bareback on Aquaman’s giant seahorse like two lovebirds atop a motorcycle. Mera contentedly rests her head on Aquaman’s back with her arms around his chest. For the two of them, it’s a solitary moment of peace and happiness — one of the many moments between them that never made it into the books.
Enjoy!
